Research / Houston AI Visibility Index

Houston AI Visibility Index
October 2026.

By Marketing & AI · Data collected

How visible are Houston small businesses to AI search? We checked 2,474 independent Houston-area business websites in October 2026. Only 31% pass four basic checks that let AI search tools find, read, and identify a business. The gaps are structure, not blocking: 45% have no business schema, 27% have no H1, and 19% show under 120 words without JavaScript. Only 1.6% block an AI search crawler.

The Index looks at what ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google AI Overviews can actually fetch and understand on a business homepage. It is a technical snapshot, not a ranking or traffic study.

01 / Key findings

What AI search can and cannot see.

Shares of independent Houston-area business homepages. Bases differ slightly: robots.txt figures use sites whose robots.txt could be read; content figures use homepages we could fetch (2,017).

31%

pass all four AI-ready basics. AI search crawlers allowed, real text without JavaScript, business schema, and exactly one H1.

Independents

45%

have no business schema. Nothing in the code states the business name, address, and phone in the standard format search engines and AI tools read.

Independents

27%

have no H1 at all. The page never states its main topic in a heading, which leaves AI tools to guess what the business does.

Independents

19%

show under 120 words without JavaScript. Most AI crawlers, including GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot, do not run JavaScript, so these homepages look nearly empty to them. Among restaurants it is 33%.

Independents

1.6%

block an AI search crawler. Blocking is rare. For most Houston businesses the gaps are content and structure, not robots.txt.

Independents

30%

publish an llms.txt file. Higher than expected. Several carry SEO-plugin signatures (for example Rank Math), so many are likely generated automatically.

03 / Independents vs chains

Big brands are not
automatically ahead.

Chains and national brands (540 sites) were counted separately so they do not skew the small-business figures.

04 / What to fix first

Four fixes, in order.

These map one-to-one to the AI-ready basics. Most take a developer an afternoon, not a rebuild.

  1. Put the words in the HTML. If your homepage text only appears after JavaScript runs, pre-render it or move it server-side.
  2. Add LocalBusiness schema. Name, address, phone, hours, and links to your official profiles. Our free generator builds it in your browser.
  3. Check robots.txt. Blocking GPTBot opts you out of training; blocking OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, or Bingbot removes you from answers.
  4. Use one clear H1 and question-style subheadings. AI tools quote short answers that sit under the question they answer.

05 / Method

How we measured.

One homepage per business, fetched once, using the same engine as our public scanner.

  • Sample: 3,014 unique business websites in the Houston metro (Harris, Fort Bend, and southern Montgomery counties) listed with a website in OpenStreetMap. Domains shared by three or more locations, or tagged with a brand, were treated as chains.
  • Date: collected October 2, 2026.
  • Crawler access: robots.txt rules were evaluated for the homepage path for Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User, PerplexityBot, and Perplexity-User. Training-only tokens (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended, CCBot) are reported separately.
  • Content without JavaScript: words in paragraphs, lists, headings, and table cells of the raw HTML, before any script runs.
  • Politeness: the crawler identified itself, honored robots.txt rules addressed to it, and fetched only robots.txt, llms.txt, and the homepage.
  • Limits: homepages only; a technical snapshot, not search rankings, traffic, or AI citations. Sites that refused the request are reported as a share, not scored.

Questions

About the Index.

How many Houston small business websites are ready for AI search?

We checked 2,474 independent Houston-area business websites in October 2026. Only 31% pass four basic checks that let AI search tools find, read, and identify a business. The gaps are structure, not blocking: 45% have no business schema, 27% have no H1, and 19% show under 120 words without JavaScript. Only 1.6% block an AI search crawler.

Why do so many sites look empty to AI crawlers?

19% of independent Houston homepages show under 120 words before JavaScript runs. Most AI crawlers, including GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot, read the raw HTML and do not run scripts, so content added by JavaScript is invisible to them.

Does blocking GPTBot remove a business from ChatGPT answers?

No. GPTBot collects training data. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User. Blocking GPTBot opts out of training; blocking OAI-SearchBot can keep a site out of ChatGPT search answers.
