AEO vs SEO:
how to rank and be the answer.

By Marketing & AI · Updated

What is the difference between AEO and SEO? SEO helps a page rank and earn clicks from search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) shapes the content on that page so search features and AI assistants can lift a direct answer from it, such as featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice answers, and AI Overviews. AEO is a layer on top of SEO: a page has to be crawlable and trusted before its answer can be used.

SEO works at the level of the page. AEO works at the level of the answer: one question, one clear passage, supported by facts. Below: a side-by-side comparison, how AEO differs from GEO, how to write an answer that gets used, and how to measure it.

01 / Comparison

AEO and SEO, side by side.

SEO earns the page its place. AEO makes the answer on it easy to use.

02 / Terms

AEO, GEO, and SEO.
How they fit together.

The labels overlap. What matters is the work behind them.

  • SEO makes pages crawlable, relevant, and trusted so they rank.
  • AEO shapes answers so search features and assistants can use them directly.
  • GEO focuses on being cited or mentioned inside AI-generated answers. See GEO vs SEO.
  • In practice one well-built page serves all three: crawlable, clearly answered, and backed by consistent facts.

03 / Writing

How to write an answer
that gets used.

A checklist for each key question on your site.

  1. Put the real customer question in a heading, in their words.
  2. Answer it in the first one or two sentences, in about 40–60 words.
  3. Follow with specifics: prices or ranges, steps, service areas, timeframes, named examples.
  4. Name your business and service in the answer, so it still makes sense when quoted alone.
  5. Keep facts consistent with your Google Business Profile and listings, and show when the page was updated.
  6. Add FAQPage markup only for questions that appear on the page. Score your answer free.

04 / Measurement

How to measure AEO.
Observations, not guarantees.

Use several signals together.

  • Google Search Console: impressions and clicks for question-style queries. Google includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in the normal web performance report, so watch those pages’ trends.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools: its AI performance reporting shows when Microsoft Copilot cites your pages.
  • GA4 referrals: visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, and gemini.google.com.
  • A monthly prompt log: ask the same 10–20 buyer questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google, and note whether you are mentioned or cited. Treat it as an observation, not a ranking.
  • Leads: calls, forms, and booked jobs. A citation that never brings a customer is not the goal.

Order of work

Doing both
with a small team.

A sequence that avoids wasted effort.

  1. Fix the SEO base first: indexing, crawl access, titles, and page speed.
  2. List the 10–20 questions customers ask before they buy or call.
  3. Answer each one on the most relevant page using the checklist above.
  4. Add matching structured data and consistent business facts.
  5. Measure monthly and improve the answers that are seen but not clicked.

05 / Questions

Common questions.

Short answers you can act on.

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. Answer features and AI assistants still rely on pages that are crawlable and trusted. AEO improves how the answer on a page is written and structured.

What is a good AEO answer length?

Start with a direct answer of about 40–60 words, then add supporting detail. Short enough to quote, complete enough to be useful.

Does FAQ schema still help with AEO?

It helps search engines understand which questions a page answers, when it matches the visible content. Google shows FAQ rich results only for a limited set of sites, so write the visible answer well first.

Can AEO guarantee a featured snippet or AI citation?

No. No one controls which answer search engines or AI tools show. AEO improves your chances by making the answer clear, specific, and easy to verify.
