GEO vs SEO:
what changes, and what to do first.

By Marketing & AI · Updated

What is the difference between GEO and SEO? SEO helps your pages rank in search results and earn clicks. GEO (generative engine optimization) helps AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews understand your pages and cite or mention your business in their answers. GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it: AI tools draw on public pages they can crawl and trust, which is the foundation SEO creates.

The goals differ (a click versus a citation or mention), the winning format differs (short, self-contained answers backed by facts), and the way you measure differs. The technical base is shared. Below: a side-by-side comparison, which one to start with for your type of business, and a practical order of work.

GEO and SEO, side by side.

Most differences are about the goal and the format. The foundation is the same.

02 / Decision guide

Which to start with,
by type of business.

If you have limited time, this is where the first effort usually pays back.

BusinessStart withAdd GEO when
Local service (roofer, plumber, car wash)SEO: Google Business Profile, service and location pages, reviews, crawl access.Your core pages are indexed. Then add direct answers to the questions customers ask before they call.
Ecommerce storeSEO: category structure, product schema, speed, clean URLs.Buyers compare products. Add clear specs, comparisons, and buying-guide answers.
Professional or B2B servicesSEO and GEO together. From the start. Buyers often research with AI assistants, so publish clear explainers with named experts and real examples.
Brand-new websiteSEO: get indexed, allow crawlers, publish a few strong pages. After Google and Bing index the site. AI tools rarely cite pages they cannot find.

03 / Order of work

What to do first.
Then what to build.

A practical sequence for a small team.

First six weeks

  1. Confirm crawl access: key pages indexed in Google Search Console and Bing, and AI search crawlers (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot) allowed in robots.txt. Check it free.
  2. Rewrite the top of each key page so the first two sentences answer the main question directly.
  3. Make business facts identical everywhere: name, services, service area, phone, and hours on your site, Google Business Profile, and directories.
  4. Add structured data that matches what is visible on the page.
  5. Optionally add a short /llms.txt that lists your key pages and facts.

Next six months

  1. Publish one page per real buyer question, with the answer first and proof after.
  2. Publish case studies with specific, verifiable results.
  3. Earn mentions on sites AI tools read: industry directories, local news, partners, and trusted community threads.
  4. Review your measurement monthly and refresh pages that lose ground.

04 / Measurement

How to measure GEO
without guessing.

No tool shows every AI answer, so combine several honest signals.

  • Google Search Console: impressions and clicks for question-style queries. Google includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in the normal web performance report, so watch those pages’ trends.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools: its AI performance reporting shows when Microsoft Copilot cites your pages.
  • GA4 referrals: visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, and gemini.google.com.
  • A monthly prompt log: ask the same 10–20 buyer questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google, and note whether you are mentioned or cited. Treat it as an observation, not a ranking.
  • Leads: calls, forms, and booked jobs. A citation that never brings a customer is not the goal.

Watch out

Mistakes that
waste the effort.

Common traps we see when businesses start on GEO.

  • Blocking AI search crawlers by accident with a copied robots.txt rule.
  • Writing for bots: keyword stuffing, invented statistics, or FAQ markup for questions that are not on the page.
  • Chasing citation counts that never turn into calls or sales.
  • Paying for “guaranteed” ChatGPT or AI Overview placement. No one controls what AI tools say.

05 / Questions

Common questions.

Short answers you can act on.

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. AI tools cite public pages they can crawl and trust, so the SEO foundation still matters. GEO adds a focus on clear, citable answers and consistent facts.

Can a small business do GEO without an agency?

Yes. Start with crawl access, a direct answer at the top of each key page, and consistent business facts. Those three steps cover most of the early value.

How long does GEO take to show results?

It depends on how quickly your pages are crawled and trusted. Expect weeks for technical fixes to be picked up, and longer for new content to earn mentions. Measure monthly.

Does GEO need special schema markup?

No special markup exists for AI answers. Use standard structured data that matches your visible content, such as Organization, LocalBusiness, FAQPage, and Article.
