Compare / AEO and GEO

AEO vs GEO:
one page, or the whole business.

By Marketing & AI · Updated

What is the difference between AEO and GEO? AEO (answer engine optimization) makes a single page easy to lift a direct answer from: a clear question, a short answer, and structure a machine can read. GEO (generative engine optimization) makes your whole business easy for AI tools to understand and cite: consistent facts, linked profiles, and mentions on sites they trust. AEO works page by page; GEO works across your entire online presence. Both sit on top of ordinary SEO.

The two terms are often used as if they mean the same thing. The useful difference is scope: one answer on one page, versus how AI systems describe your business everywhere they look. Below: a side-by-side comparison, what our Houston data says about each, and the order to do them in.

AEO and GEO, side by side.

Same goal, being the source an AI or search feature uses. Different scope and different signals.

02 / Local data

What 2,474 Houston sites show about each.

From our Houston AI Visibility Index (October 2026, independent business homepages). Some checks are AEO signals, some are GEO signals.

AEO signals

  • 18.6% show under 120 words before JavaScript runs, so there is little or no answer to lift.
  • 54.0% have exactly one H1. The rest have none or several, which blurs what the page is about.
  • 34.3% use question-style headings, the format answer engines match most directly.

GEO signals

  • 98.4% let AI search crawlers in through robots.txt. Access is rarely the problem.
  • 54.7% have business schema that states who they are.
  • 35.7% link their social and directory profiles with sameAs, the signal that ties those profiles to one business.

Houston businesses are mostly open to AI tools but hard for them to understand. Almost every site lets AI crawlers in, yet about half give them no clear page structure or business identity to work with. For most local sites that means AEO fixes on key pages first, then the identity work GEO depends on.

03 / Order of work

Do them in this order.

A practical sequence for a small team.

  1. SEO basics: key pages indexed in Google and Bing, fast, and readable without JavaScript. Check a page free.
  2. AEO on your top pages: answer the main question in the first two sentences, use question-style headings, and keep one clear H1.
  3. GEO across your presence: business schema with sameAs links, identical name, address, phone and services on every listing, and mentions on local and industry sites.
  4. Measure both: Search Console for question queries (AEO), and a monthly prompt log plus AI referral visits (GEO).

04 / Questions

Common questions.

Short answers you can act on.

Is AEO a part of GEO?

They overlap rather than nest. A clear, quotable answer on your page (AEO) is one of the things a generative engine uses when it describes your business (GEO). But GEO also depends on what other sites say about you, and no amount of on-page work can fix that part.

Which should a small business do first, AEO or GEO?

AEO on your most important pages. It is fully in your control, it builds on SEO you are already doing, and it can be picked up within weeks of a recrawl. GEO work such as consistent listings and earned mentions takes longer, so start it alongside, not before.

How do I use AEO and GEO together?

Answer the main question in the first two sentences of each key page (AEO), then make sure the facts in those answers, such as your name, services, service area and prices, match your schema, Google Business Profile and directory listings (GEO). The page gives AI tools a quotable answer; the matching facts give them a reason to trust it.
