## Houston restaurants and AI search. A third look empty to AI.

By [Andres Rusic](https://marketingandai.com/about/andres-rusic/), Marketing & AI · Data collected October 2, 2026 · Updated October 4, 2026

How visible are Houston restaurants to AI search? We checked 767 independent Houston-area restaurant and food websites in October 2026. Only 24% pass the four basic AI-readiness checks, against 31% of local businesses overall. The biggest gap: 33% show under 120 words before JavaScript runs, almost double the Houston average, so tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity often see a nearly empty page.

This is the restaurant and food slice of the [Houston AI Visibility Index](https://marketingandai.com/research/houston-ai-visibility-index/): every check, compared with all independent Houston businesses, plus a part-of-town breakdown.

### Restaurants against the Houston average.

Share of readable homepages: 616 restaurant and food sites, 2,017 independent businesses overall. [Robots.txt](https://marketingandai.com/learn/glossary/#robots-txt) rates use sites with a readable robots.txt.

Independent Houston-area homepages, October 2026. Houston average = all 2,017 readable independent business homepages.
| Check | Restaurants | Houston average |
| Pass all four AI-ready basics | 23.7% | 30.9% |
| Under 120 words readable [without JavaScript](https://marketingandai.com/learn/glossary/#readable-without-javascript) | 33.0% | 18.6% |
| Use question-style headings | 16.9% | 34.3% |
| Have a tap-to-call phone link | 38.5% | 54.1% |
| Have [business schema](https://marketingandai.com/learn/glossary/#local-business-schema) | 51.9% | 54.7% |
| Have exactly one H1 | 50.2% | 54.0% |
| Link profiles with sameAs | 30.0% | 35.7% |
| Missing a meta description | 25.5% | 22.6% |
| Serve an [llms.txt](https://marketingandai.com/learn/glossary/#llms-txt) file | 27.1% | 29.9% |
| Block an [AI search crawler](https://marketingandai.com/learn/glossary/#ai-search-crawler) in robots.txt | 2.1% | 1.6% |
| Block Googlebot or Bingbot in robots.txt | 1.9% | 1.0% |

Three gaps stand out. A third of restaurant homepages are nearly empty without JavaScript. Only 16.9% use question-style headings, half the local average, even though diners ask very specific questions. And fewer than 4 in 10 have a tap-to-call link, on the device most people use to book a table.

02 / By part of town

### Inside the Loop scores lowest.

Areas with at least 25 readable restaurant homepages, assigned by each listing’s ZIP code. The Bay Area group (Clear Lake, Webster, League City) is small, so treat it as indicative.

Independent restaurant and food homepages by area, October 2026. Sites = readable homepages; AI-ready = pass all four basics; Empty = under 120 words without JavaScript.
| Area | Sites | AI-ready | Empty |
| Inside the Loop | 179 | 19.6% | 34.1% |
| West & Southwest | 85 | 22.4% | 36.5% |
| Bay Area | 25 | 24.0% | 16.0% |
| Spring & Klein | 49 | 28.6% | 28.6% |
| Other suburbs | 51 | 29.4% | 31.4% |

Inside the Loop, where competition for diners is densest, only 19.6% of restaurant homepages pass the basics. West and Southwest Houston has the highest share of nearly empty homepages, at 36.5%.

03 / What to fix first

### Five fixes for a restaurant site.

In order of what usually unblocks AI tools first.

- Turn JavaScript off and look: open your homepage with scripts disabled. If your name, cuisine, neighborhood, hours and menu highlights are not there as text, AI crawlers cannot see them either.
- Put the menu in plain text: at least your main dishes, price range and dietary options, not only a photo, PDF or ordering widget.
- Answer the questions diners ask: headings such as “Do you take reservations?”, “Is there parking?” and “Do you have vegan options?”, each with a short answer.
- Add Restaurant schema: name, address, phone, hours, cuisine and a link to the menu, matching your [Google Business Profile](https://marketingandai.com/learn/glossary/#google-business-profile). [Generate it free](https://marketingandai.com/free-tools/local-business-schema/).
- Make the phone number tappable: a tel: link in the header, so a diner on a phone can call in one tap.

04 / Questions

### Common questions.

Short answers for restaurant owners.

**Why do restaurant websites look empty to AI tools?**

Most AI crawlers, including GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, read the raw HTML and do not run JavaScript. If a homepage builds its text with scripts, or shows the menu only as an image or embedded widget, those crawlers see little or nothing. Our data shows how often it happens, not why, so check your own homepage with JavaScript turned off.

**Can ChatGPT read my restaurant menu?**

Only if the menu is real text in the page HTML. ChatGPT search reads pages through its crawler, OAI-SearchBot, which does not run scripts. A menu that exists only as a photo, a PDF link or a script-loaded widget may not be readable. Put at least your main dishes, prices and dietary options in plain text.

**Should a restaurant block AI crawlers?**

Usually not. Blocking AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot can keep you out of the answers people get when they ask where to eat. Training crawlers such as GPTBot are different; blocking them does not remove you from ChatGPT search. Only 2.1% of Houston restaurant sites block an AI search crawler, so this is rarely the problem.

05 / Method

### How this slice was measured.

Same crawl and definitions as the full Index.

“Restaurants and food” means independent (non-chain) businesses tagged in OpenStreetMap as restaurants, fast food, cafés, bars or pubs, plus a few food shops, with a website in Harris, Fort Bend or southern Montgomery County. One homepage per business, fetched on October 2, 2026. Full method, data (CC BY 4.0) and DOI: [Houston AI Visibility Index](https://marketingandai.com/research/houston-ai-visibility-index/#method).
