## Answer engine optimization for local businesses.

By [Andres Rusic](https://marketingandai.com/about/andres-rusic/), Marketing & AI · Updated November 2, 2026

What is answer engine optimization? [Answer engine](https://marketingandai.com/learn/glossary/#answer-engine) optimization ([AEO](https://marketingandai.com/learn/glossary/#aeo)) is making your pages easy for AI assistants and answer features to find, trust and quote, so ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google’s [AI Mode](https://marketingandai.com/learn/glossary/#ai-mode) use them when a customer asks a question. For a local business the answer also depends on your Business Profile, reviews and listings, the part usually called [GEO](https://marketingandai.com/learn/glossary/#geo), so this guide covers both.

This guide is built on our [Houston AI Citation Study](https://marketingandai.com/research/houston-ai-citation-study/): 232 local questions asked of four AI engines, the 4,790 citations behind their answers, and 40 website factors tested on 880 Houston business sites. It covers how each engine chooses, what held up, what to skip and how to measure progress.

AI-assisted SEO/AEO/GEO means using AI to help with the work. AEO means improving how a page can support an answer. Google says both rely on sound SEO: useful content, crawl access, and accurate facts. Special AI markup is not required, and no method guarantees a citation.

### What AEO means for a local business.

Search used to end with a list of links. Now many questions end with an answer that names a few businesses. AEO is the work of being one of them.

SEO, AEO and GEO compared
| Measure | [SEO](https://marketingandai.com/learn/glossary/#seo) | AEO | GEO |
| Goal | Rank a page in the list of results. | Be the passage an answer quotes. | Be the business an AI tool describes and recommends. |
| Judged on | Relevance, links and page quality. | Clear answers, readable text and structure. | Your profile, listings, reviews and mentions, plus your site. |
| Where the work happens | Your site. | Your pages, one question at a time. | Your site, Business Profile, directories and press. |

02 / How engines choose

### How each AI engine picks local businesses.

The four engines in our study read different sources. On Houston “who is the best” questions, this is where their citations went.

Four AI engines on Houston “who is the best” questions
| Measure | Google AI Mode | Perplexity | ChatGPT | Claude |
| Citations to [Google Business Profiles](https://marketingandai.com/learn/glossary/#google-business-profile) | 79% | 0% | 0.2% | 0% |
| Citations to business websites | 5.3% | 49% | 23% | 29% |
| Citations to directories, review and ranking sites | 9.3% | 45% | 68% | 65% |
| Picks backed by the business’s own website | 7.1% | 38% | 14% | 15% |
| Same top pick when asked again | not tested | 82% | 36% | 56% |

Google AI Mode and Perplexity were asked on October 30, 2026; ChatGPT search and Claude with web search, through their [APIs](https://marketingandai.com/learn/glossary/#api), on October 31. Source: [Houston AI Citation Study](https://marketingandai.com/research/houston-ai-citation-study/), section 08.

- 01 Google AI Mode recommends from Business Profiles. 96% of the businesses it named came straight from Google Business Profiles. The ones it picked had a median 4.9 stars and 323 reviews.

- 02 Perplexity reads business websites and directories. About half of its citations went to business sites. A business’s own website backed 38% of its picks; most of the rest rested only on pages such as Yelp, Zocdoc, Best Lawyers or HAR.com.

- 03 ChatGPT leans on directories. 68% of its citations on “best” questions went to directories, review and ranking sites. Its most-cited sources were BestProsInTown and Birdeye, and it never cited Yelp.

- 04 Claude leans on Yelp and ranking pages. Yelp appeared in 88 of Claude’s 120 “best” answers, and 67% of its citations on those questions were “best of” or “top 10” pages.

They rarely agree. Google AI Mode and Perplexity named the same first business in only 10 of 108 answers, and across all four engines 79% of business and question pairs were named by just one engine. More detail: [which websites AI assistants cite](https://marketingandai.com/learn/ai-citation-sources/).

03 / What held up

### Six website factors that held up.

We tested 40 commonly recommended factors on 880 Houston business homepages: 492 that Google AI Mode or Perplexity cited and 388 in the same industries that they did not. Six held up in every test, with industry and link authority held constant. Full results: [the AI citation factor test](https://marketingandai.com/research/houston-ai-citation-study/ai-citation-factors/).

- 01

#### Show reviews or testimonials on your homepage

75% of cited sites showed them, against 46% of sites that were not cited (odds ratio 3.4). Among Houston businesses in the census, 14.1% of sites with reviews were cited, against 3.2% without.

Tip: Use real quotes with a name and a place. A short line and a link to your Google reviews is enough to start.

- 02

#### Use the specific business type in your schema

Marking the business up as a Dentist, Plumber or Attorney, not just LocalBusiness, went with 3 times the odds of being cited. 15.3% of census sites with a specific type were cited, against 4.7% without.

Tip: Generate the markup with the free [LocalBusiness schema generator](https://marketingandai.com/free-tools/local-business-schema/), then match the type to your main Business Profile category.

- 03

#### Publish prices, even starting prices

35% of cited sites showed at least one dollar amount, against 18% of the rest (odds ratio 2.5). On cost questions, 41% of the business pages AI Mode cited were pricing or cost pages.

Tip: “From $X” or a range works. If prices vary, say what changes them.

- 04

#### Say how long you have been in business

A line such as “since 1998” or “25 years serving Katy” appeared on 53% of cited sites and 36% of the rest (odds ratio 1.8). Census sites that said it were cited twice as often (12.6% against 6.0%).

Tip: Put it in plain text near the top of the homepage and on the About page.

- 05

#### Give each city you serve its own page

69% of cited sites listed at least one page named after a Houston-area city or neighborhood in their [sitemap](https://marketingandai.com/learn/glossary/#xml-sitemap), against 46% of the rest; the median cited site had 10. City and location pages were also the most-cited business pages (40%).

Tip: Make each city page specific: a local job, travel time, local reviews. A copied page with the city name swapped adds little.

- 06

#### Write a meta description for every page

96% of cited sites had one, against 79% of sites that were not cited, and none of the 82 census sites without one was cited.

Tip: Two plain sentences: what you do, where, and one detail a customer cares about.

04 / What did not hold up

### What did not hold up on its own.

These went with citations at first glance, but added nothing once the six factors were known, or showed no clear link at all.

- 01 llms.txt. 46% of cited sites had one, against 33% of the rest, but the difference disappeared once content factors were in the model, and Google says Search ignores the file. Full write-up: [does llms.txt help AI search?](https://marketingandai.com/learn/llms-txt/)

- 02 FAQ schema and generic business schema. Both were more common on cited sites, but tested together, the specific business type carried the signal and the rest added nothing.

- 03 Fresh sitemaps. Common on well-kept sites, with no effect of their own once the other factors were known.

- 04 Page speed and domain age. 60% of cited homepages responded in under 1.5 seconds, against 63% of the rest. Cited sites were, if anything, younger: a median of 10.2 years against 12.5.

- 05 Crawler access. 98% of cited sites and 92% of the rest allowed [AI search crawlers](https://marketingandai.com/learn/glossary/#ai-search-crawler) in [robots.txt](https://marketingandai.com/learn/glossary/#robots-txt). Allowing them is table stakes; it did not set a site apart.

- 06 Links. Mixed. Cited sites had about the same Common Crawl rank as the rest, but among census businesses the more-linked half was cited more often. Treat links as helpful rather than decisive for local answers.

05 / Off your site

### Where most local recommendations come from.

For local questions, your website is one source among many. Google AI Mode backed only 7.1% of its picks with the business’s own site, and ChatGPT and Claude 14 to 15%.

- 01

#### Complete and maintain your Google Business Profile

In 101 of 108 AI Mode answers with picks, every business came from a Business Profile card. Review counts varied by industry, from a median of 27 for SEO agencies and about 100 for chiropractors to over 700 for dentists and auto repair.

Tip: Check your primary category, service areas and hours every month, and ask happy customers for reviews.

- 02

#### Be listed where each engine reads

Claude cited Yelp in 88 of 120 “best” answers. ChatGPT cited BestProsInTown 69 times and Birdeye 48 times and never cited Yelp. Perplexity used Yelp, Zocdoc, Best Lawyers and HAR.com, among others.

Tip: Use the same name, phone and address everywhere, so each listing is clearly you.

- 03

#### Earn places on lists that rank businesses

67% of Claude’s citations on “best” questions were “best of” or “top 10” pages, against 29% for ChatGPT. Lists that rank yourself gave no edge: when a business’s own “best of” post was cited, Perplexity recommended it 47% of the time, about the same as for its other cited pages (45%).

Tip: Ask local publications and trade associations to review or list you rather than writing a list that ranks yourself first.

06 / Answer pages

### What the pages engines cite have in common.

When an engine does cite a business’s own site, it cites a specific page. These are the traits the cited business pages in our study shared; treat them as a pattern to follow, not a formula.

- 01 They are about a place or a price. City and location pages were 40% of cited business pages, homepages 21%, service pages 16% and pricing pages 14%.

- 02 They name the city where it counts. For “who is the best” questions, 80% of cited business pages named the city in the URL or title, and 61% in the H1.

- 03 They have real text in the HTML. The median cited page had 1,235 words readable [without JavaScript](https://marketingandai.com/learn/glossary/#readable-without-javascript). A page that only fills in after scripts run gives an engine little to quote.

- 04 They answer first. Lead with the answer a customer wants, in one or two sentences: what you do, where, and the number they care about, such as a price or a response time. Put proof such as reviews or years in business close by.

- 05 Their structure helps readers, not tricks. 67% of cited pages used question-style subheadings and 57% had FAQ schema, but in the factor test neither added anything once the six factors were known. Use them because they make a page easier to scan.

07 / Measure

### How to measure AI visibility without fooling yourself.

One answer proves little. Asked the same question again minutes later, Perplexity kept its top pick 82% of the time, Claude 56% and ChatGPT 36%.

- 01 Ask blind questions. Ask what a customer would ask, such as “who is the best plumber in Katy?”, never your business name. Questions that name you almost always find you and prove nothing.

- 02 Ask more than once, on more than one engine. Repeat each question and count how often you appear, engine by engine.

- 03 Add a control. Include one unrelated question. If your business seems to appear there, your matching is wrong.

- 04 Keep the same questions every month. Changing the questions makes every comparison meaningless.

- 05 Watch the pages that get cited. City, pricing and service pages are where citations land first; track them in [Search Console](https://marketingandai.com/learn/glossary/#google-search-console). The free [AI search visibility checker](https://marketingandai.com/free-tools/ai-search-visibility/) tests the basics on any page in about 10 seconds.

08 / Plan

### A 90-day AEO plan for a local business.

- 01

#### Days 1–30: fix the basics on your site

Meta descriptions on every page, reviews on the homepage, the specific business type in your schema, starting prices, a years-in-business line, and a page for each city you serve.

Tip: Start with the homepage and your top three service pages.

- 02

#### Days 31–60: fix your profile and listings

Complete your Business Profile, then the directories the engines read for your trade. Ask recent customers for reviews.

Tip: Keep a sheet of every listing with its exact name, phone and URL.

- 03

#### Days 61–90: measure and expand

Ask the same blind questions again, note which pages were cited, and add a page for each question you still miss.

Tip: One page per question works better than one long page that tries to answer everything.

09 / Questions

### Common questions.

Short answers you can act on.

**What is answer engine optimization?**

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is making your pages easy for AI assistants and answer features to find, trust and quote. For a local business it also means keeping your Business Profile, reviews and listings accurate, because engines such as Google AI Mode and Claude recommend from those sources.

**Is AEO different from SEO?**

It builds on SEO rather than replacing it. SEO aims to rank a page in a list of results; AEO aims to be the passage or business an answer uses. Crawlable pages, clear structure and accurate facts serve both.

**How long does AEO take to work?**

Changes to your own pages can be picked up at the next crawl, often within days to a few weeks. Profile and listing work takes longer, and earned mentions longest. Measure monthly with the same questions so you can see the change.

**Does AEO work for service-area businesses without a storefront?**

Yes. Google AI Mode recommends from Business Profiles, and [service-area businesses](https://marketingandai.com/learn/glossary/#service-area-business) can have one with the address hidden. City pages matter even more without a storefront: in our study, 69% of cited sites had at least one city page in their sitemap.

**Do I need an llms.txt file?**

Not for local AI search, in our data. It went with citations at first but added nothing once reviews, prices and city pages were known, and Google says Search ignores it. It does no harm, so add one after the basics if you like.

**Which AI engine matters most for a local business?**

The one your customers use, and they differ. Google AI Mode reads Business Profiles, Perplexity reads websites and directories, and ChatGPT and Claude lean on directories and ranking pages. Fix the shared basics first, then the sources each engine reads.

**Can I do AEO myself?**

Much of it, yes. The six site factors, your Business Profile and your listings are all things an owner can update. The harder parts are measuring fairly and earning mentions on sites the engines already trust.

**How do I know if AI assistants recommend my business?**

Ask the questions your customers ask, without naming your business, several times on each engine, and count how often you appear. Keep the questions the same month to month. Our free AI search visibility checker covers the site basics.
